Dental implants have been around since the Maya civilization but the more recent history shows that people have been successfully using them since 1952, when Dr. Leonard Linkow placed the first dental transplant. Soon, this became a mainstream procedure gaining popularity all over the world.

However, we shouldn’t neglect the experimental dental implants that were used in the 18th-19th century, which were made from different metal alloys. These were, unfortunately, rejected by people’s bodies and there was no long term success with them. Even human teeth were used and they were also rejected by getting infected, so a new material was definitely necessary to go one step further.

The next important discovery that somehow revolutionized dental implants was made by Stefano Melchiade Tramonte who introduced titanium as a main material for dental restorations. He used a titanium screw on himself. It also started being used for hip and knee replacements because it’s a metal that easily bonds with the human tissue.

However, a lot of people were still reluctant to try dental implants as they were even considered to be unsafe by the medical community so there were even more preconceived ideas when it came to people who wanted to use them.

A number of medical studies were made and this was considered safe by the general population in the 80s and people started asking their dentists for this procedure. The dental implant had a great increase during the 90s as new technology was discovered and people were able to avoid most of the side effects that were common at the beginning of this medical procedure. Nowadays, dental implants are no longer a painful and long lasting surgery that needs intense after care. It is merely a common procedure that can be done in just a few sessions and the patient will not experience great discomfort.

The new dental implants feel, look, and act just like real teeth so there won’t be any unusual feel. Another important thing is the fact that they are much better than dentures since they offer more support while chewing, they are definitely more durable and they last a lifetime.
